It seems that we hear about a different crime occurring on our campus almost all of the time. Whether it is a mugging or someone’s room had been broken into, there is always something occurring that shouldn’t be. It also seems that many people, including myself, are quick to jump on the backs of those in the Security department for either their poor efforts or their lack of attentiveness to continuing problems. However, the fact of the matter is that Security has hired over 20 new officers — although they won’t tell you that. At the same time, there have been many who have left. So with this information you may be saying to yourself; “Where are all of these new officers? I haven’t seen an increase in any security activity.”

Well, what we have to keep in mind is the fact that UR supplies not just the River Campus with officers but also Strong Hospital, Eastman School of Music and Riverside. Now, with this information, it is still my opinion that a lot more can be done; it doesn’t seem very fair that UR students have to basically live in fear when traveling at night on a campus where walking everywhere is pretty much necessary.

I also find it ridiculous that we remain an open campus with, it seems, inadequate security. I feel that our Security department has spread itself way too thin. It is unfair to ask X-amount of officers to cover so much area and be expected to perform their job to the fullest.

Don’t get me wrong, the officers themselves are doing their best, but it just seems impossible to be able to watch over so much. It is this writer’s opinion that some things need to drastically change, especially at UR, where tens of thousands of dollars are being spent by students to attend such a fine university.
