It’s the penultimate meeting for this year’s Students’ Association Senators, but the ultimate showdown plays out in Detroit only 21 minutes into this week’s SA assembly. CTQ’s loyalties are divided, but we’ll keep the focus — promise.
SUSTAIN THIS: On Earth Day, Danforth Dining Center will abstain from providing trays, guided by data suggesting students will eat less, etc. etc. until all the world’s problems are solved — although students could just get more plates (an exercise CTQ is well aware of). CTQ favorite Senator Janna Gewirtz isn’t so fond of the idea: “I’d like to go on the record that Danforth should never go trayless.” We only just managed to hear this, on the heels of another senator’s comments about a lettuce gnome. What jiggery-pokery is this?
THE THINGS YOU LEARN: Speaker Harrell Kirstein found out that freshmen Senators don’t have mailboxes.
FOR THE RECORD: After the slightly late arrival of Senator Gao Chen, the Senate had all members, plus SA President Tyler Socash, in attendance. In case, you know, you wondered.
GETTING READY TO DETOX: Elections Chair Sumya Hasan is almost done with this year’s elections. Anyone remember November 4? Yeah. Good times.
NCAA RECAP #1: Six minutes away, CTQ discovers that the NCAA video player requires a few technical enhancements. Downloads go!
SA CLUB COUNT: 227, with 10 on preliminary status (including most recent edition “Louvre,” a dance group). Students of Interfaith Action also received full group status. Ten or so groups have been added in full this year.
NCAA RECAP #2: After tip-off, the first basket goes to the Tar Heels, but MSU rebounds with a 3-pointer. Spectacular!
LET THE OTHER HALF BE HEARD: All-Campus Judicial Council nominees have been chosen after a grueling 10 hours (not too shabby). Confirmed by the Senate for next year:
1. Sara Gotthelf
2. Siddhartha Das
3. Tess Petersen
4. Ezra Mechaber (taking his leave from the Senate)
5. Olivia Jane Cohn
Congratulations to all of them, as well as Chief Justice Scott Group for running the proceedings.
NCAA RECAP #3: The Spartans suddenly aren’t faring well. At all.
HER VOICE IS FULL OF MONEY: But SA Treasurer Franchesca Guzman has better things to do than talk Gatsby. Today is the Senate’s vote on the budget. They’ll get to it after talking first about it. Gewirtz notes that Senators need to see the budget before the meeting so they can prepare themselves: “We’re about to look at this blind.” $942,840.34: The total subsidy acquired by the SA, to be spent on everything that isn’t self-sustaining. The Senate approved the budget as UNC widened its lead to 15 points.
STRAP IN: Elections for Speaker and Deputy Speaker start next week. CTQ wonders if there will be a candidate running by proxy? The beloved Green and White aren’t going to get the glory this year, but God bless ‘em for getting this far. Happy Passover and Happy Easter, and we’ll see you next week. Adjourned!
