Student Government, Part II

April 14th, 2009 by John G. Roman III

Does anyone feel like there are so many people representing the thoughts of students, yet no one really know s what is going on? After the past week of elections and campaigning, I hope that everyone got to truly look into each and every person they voted for. It just feels like there are so many good and valid suggestions from so many students but none of them ever come to fruition, either because they’re not voiced or the student simply does not know where to go. I feel like the student government, the same governing body of students that we all elect should be a huge bridge to gap the voices of students directly and the administration. However it doesn’t always seem that is the case always. Sometimes it feels like our suggestions may fall on deaf ears.

I used to think that Student Government did absolutely nothing except talk a big game, however after being present for many meetings I realized that was not the case. On the contrary actually, a lot was being done and a lot was set to be done, although not all of the goals really reflected student’s opinions. It seemed that personal opinions were taking over others’ suggestions.

If I have any advice to give, it’s this: Don’t think that your suggestion is too small or too big; if you have something you feel strongly about or something that you feel just isn’t right, you need to speak up, because half of the time a small group’s suggestions are mistaken to be representative of the student body itself. If you feel the food is poorly prepared at Danforth Dining Center then say something. If you’re upset about the bus situation with bar parties, say something. Go to a Senate meeting, talk to someone, set up meetings or, heck, e-mail me. I’d be glad to help. But don’t be silenced; whether you’re a freshman, sophomore, junior or about to leave, let yourself be heard.
