Every once in a while, we find ourselves craving a little bit of Rochester. Since there are so many alumni living in NYC, we figured we’d share some of the places we’ve found to be good substitutes for some Rochester favorites.
Rochester: Nick Tahou’s
NYC: Trout
100-102 Smith Street at Pacific Street, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn
Looking for a garbage plate in the city? Check out Trout. Located in Brooklyn, the garbage plate served here is modeled after Nick Tahou’s. Its components are macaroni salad, fries and 2 cheeseburgers covered in ketchup and mustard. Not quite the same, but pretty close. Only served after 10 pm.
Rochester: Dinosaur BBQ
NYC: Dinosaur BBQ
646 W 131st St, Manhattan
No substitute here. Dinosaur BBQ’s NYC location opened in December 2004. Located in Harlem, it’s a little out of the way but worth the ride uptown. With $3 cans of Genny Cream Ale, you’ll feel like you’re back in Rochester. The only menu difference we’ve noticed is potato salad in place of macaroni salad; according to the owner, mac salad doesn’t sell in Harlem.
Rochester: All bars
NYC: Luckydog
303 Bedford Avenue, Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Small bar with backyard seating, serving 24 oz Genny Cream drafts for only $4.
Rochester: Sal’s Birdland
NYC: Amy Ruth’s
113 W. 116th Street, Manhattan
To our knowledge, no one in NYC has tried to copy a sandwich from Sal’s Birdland, but the chicken and waffles at Amy Ruth’s is a yummy alternative. Instead of BBQ chicken on white bread, think fried chicken on top of a waffle, topped with butter and syrup.
