Impeachy

November 17th, 2009 by Ross Brenneman

The Senate came to order last night with a heavy agenda that no one wanted, and if you weren’t already up to speed beforehand, then the idea that Motions C and D of new business involved the IMPEACHMENT OF TWO SENATORS might have been a little surprising.

But hey, that’s why there was a nice half hour lead-in of other stuff to do first. SO YOU’LL JUST HAVE TO WAIT. Or, you know, skip down a little. Only then you’ll miss the news and links and jokes and stuff.

Sen. J.J. Gonzalez noted that the Fraternity and Sorority Management Committee has jumped forward in their efforts to expand Panhell from six sororities to seven. Invitations to national organizations went out this past week. HOPEFULLY THE REJECTS WON’T BE “SOR” LOSERS. (We’re clever.)

All Class Councils put in a joint supplemental request for a printer and external hard drive for their office, according to Treasurer Andrew Flack. In other Flackery (FLACK!), Appropriations will also probably give some money to Tae Kwon Do to help ensure the future of Do-ing stuff. STILL CLEVER!

Projects and Services announced the reconvening of the Pandemic Working Group to deal with possible Swinery during the Thanksgiving and Holiday breaks. Sen. Bradley Halpern noted ever so delicately that, “I would encourage you not to get sick and be stranded here.” SHOCKING. On input from Sen. Shubho Bhattacharyya and Dep. Speaker Dan Cohn, who have both been quarantined this semester, Halpern noted he was working with UHS to clarify facemask policy for roommates of pig assault.

Facilities placed 10 new bike racks on campus, as P&S requested, only not where they were supposed to go. ALSO SHOCKING. There will be an additional 10 bike racks placed, also incorrectly, in the spring.

The Walk for Light is today, and it is conveniently placed during popular class time, but as Sen. Calvin Yoon noted, that’s the only time the administrators could do it, since they have that whole we-want-to-go-home-after-work thing. EXCUSES, EXCUSES.

There will be a Transportation Focus Group meeting this week in the Fauver Office. Only if you go to it, you can’t ever leave, or else the office will move and never be found again. WHY YES, THAT WAS A BRIGADOON REFERENCE.

In New Business, the Senate confirmed UR Cooking Club as a recognized group, and on a motion from Sen. Asad Arastu, last week’s minutes were approved. Good times in New Busin — oh. Right. THERE’S A LITTLE MORE TO DO.

For several weeks, CTQ has been registering disappointment in the lack of participation by the freshmen senators. Well, the meeting last night became all about one of them: Chizoba Umesi, the subject of Motion C: IMPEACHMENT.

Umesi, a member of the P&S Committee and Steering Committee, has failed to go to three P&S meetings in a row, although fully aware they were necessary to attend. After reviewing the committee attendance records this past week, Speaker Kiersten Hughes and Cohn noted Umesi’s absences, and per by-laws, he was immediately recommended to the Steering Committee for impeachment. Steering approved it for the senate agenda, and after an uninspired defense of his actions and almost an hour of executive session, the Senate impeached Umesi with a two-thirds majority. AWKWARD SILENCE.

Tentative Motion D concerned the impeachment of Sneha Rath due to meeting absences, but no senator made the motion, ostensibly due to something said in Executive Session. PRE-EMPTIVE STRIKE!

So, uh, yeah. Some other stuff happened. Weissers noted in his report that there are millions of pages of useless code tied to the UR Web site. He and the senate administration had breakfast with UR President Seligman, as well, where they told him that UR was lagging behind its peers in wireless access. The MAN said he’d work on that.

This week we remembered that rules mean nothing if they aren’t enforced and serving in an organization means nothing without dedication and interest. Or passion, as Weissmann would say.

CTQ formally apologizes for posting later than usual, but we put aside our writing time last night to watch the meteor shower and remember how cool life really is.

Adjourned!

Correction Ross: I had missed a couple “office hours” (which also none were warned could lead to impeachment until much later in the semester).
& I have attended every senate “meeting”!

In case you’re wondering why I’m replying so late - I just found this one while I was going through the archive & reading the ones I missed… anyway, good work overall! ;)
