UR hosted its first squash home match of the season last Saturday but it wasn’t a normal season opener. Instead of the boys’ varsity team playing, it was the new girls’ club team that challenged a team from William Smith.
It all started last year when Lauren Reynolds, a student and squash enthusiast, took command. She started putting up posters around campus trying to find other girls interested in the sport. She was able to find a small group of potential players, but it wasn’t until this year when the club really took off. This year, which is the first club’s official year, there are almost 20 girls on the roster.
The girls had played their first match a few weeks ago when they traveled to Cleveland, OH. Although it was the first competitive match for most of them, they were able to clinch a notable win over Notre Dame’s team. Quite an impressive start!
The team’s Saturday’s match, however, proved to be too big of a challenge, as William Smith is a top-20 team in the country. Nevertheless, many of the girls gave their opponents good runs and the crowd was entertained by good squash.
The boys’ team would like to congratulate the girls on their first win and their great start overall. It’s nice to see more and more people get into squash and notice the squash courts being used more than ever.

Wasn’t aware there was a girls team and it’s great knowing how the two teams support each other.
