“V” — It’s Only the Beginning

December 4th, 2009 by Erica Hyman

I hate that shows always seem to go on hiatus just as things start to get really good. A number of people jumped aboard the “V” mothership after the first couple episodes, but I was hesistant. I enjoyed seeing Morena Baccarin (Anna) and Elizabeth Mitchell (Erica) enough, but that is mostly because I’m a fan of their previous work: Baccarin from “Firefly” and Mitchell from “Lost”. After a while, the novelty of their appearances begins to wear off and the show needs to step up. After 4 episodes, I finally feel like “V” did just that.

Things are not looking good for our human resistance movement. As if going up against Anna and all the human and V supporters wasn’t hard enough, it looks like Erica and crew will eventually face a full blown invasion. That does beg the question (and I’m so glad I’m finally using my brain with this show), why not just veni vidi vici it? The V’s appear to have adequate technology to annihilate and/or enslave, and now we see they clearly have the numbers. I can’t understand why they need to gain the human’s trust and sympathy. And if they needed the humans for something, food or fuel, they already had spies doing recon work ahead of the “mothership” arriving. I use quotes because that final shot showed hundreds of big, bad motherships. That can not be good for humans.

I was relieved to see some of the V plots taking shape. Healing humans? Using the Ambassadors’ jackets and V plants to spy on humans? I found that a tad boring and to be expected of any intelligent invasion. But dosing the flu vaccine with some bad chemical and masking that with a red herring, the V-approved vitamin shot? That’s brilliant and clever, and I approve.

The only thing I wished has happened by now was seeing a non-humanoid Visitor. We know they have a scaly, lizard beneath their soft, attractive human shell, I think it’s high time we see one! I thought for sure we’d get a shot of that skinned V on the table as a parting shot. I guess I’ll have to wait until at least March for that satisfaction.
