Forward Momentum

February 2nd, 2010 by Ross Brenneman

With four Greek senators out due to the last phase of rush, the Senate hovered just above quorum. Nevertheless, the legislature pushed through a significant amount of new business, and each committee seemed knee-deep in work. ON ON!

The All-Campus Judicial Council upheld the impeachment of former Senator Chizoba Umesi, as Speaker Kierstin Hughes revealed to any senators not already in the loop. Collective breath … and MOVING ON!

According to Deputy Speaker Dan Cohn, the College is investigating the possibility of adjunct professors, as a more economically favorable option. It hadn’t been done before because … well … c’mon. TOO CRUNK TO ADJUNC.

SA Treasurer Andrew Flack(!) announced two funding issues. First, Campus Activities Board came up for a $113 supplemental request for a new printer. They’d previously requested money for a printer, but they didn’t spend it right away, the price jumped over $100, and the SA Treasurer asked them to make a new formal request. FLACK SMACK!

Additionally, the Senior Class Council requested additional funding. The need comes from never raising the senior fee — which gives them their initial money — anytime in the last 10 years. MO’ MONEY LESS PROBLEMS!

Communications has a new Club Spotlight this week on Circle K. And there are 45 SA Government followers on Twitter. SWEET TWEETING.

Policy and Review denied preliminary status to Global China Connection. Hughes announced that Make-a-Wish (UR Chapter) might possibly appeal the denial handed to them. WISHFUL THINKING!

Projects & Services:
1. Meliora Dinners: Every Thursday night for February
2. The DVD Library is going through a review.
3. The Blue and Gold Line shuttles have been lacking this semester, and Co-Chair Bradley Halpern has already been getting complaints. We’ll see if the GPS systems will pick up the heads sure to roll.
4. Gold Line shuttle hours have expanded as a result of discussion between Projects and the-transportation-powers-that-be. So now the Gold Line can now fail to show up even more!
5. Projects and Services is working with Information Technology to lessen the costs of double-sided printing to the same price as single-sided printing.
6. The Library’s Voyager search system is not very effective, and some Senate members want it changed. Maybe they could run a Google search on effective ways to find information. THINK ABOUT IT.

In New Business, everyone ever changed their constitutions: Ballet Performance Group, UR Genocide Intervention, Biomedical Engineering Society, American Sign Language Club and Shades all had changes, all of which were approved. The best quote of the night, though, went to Kelli Summers, who represented both URGI and BMES: “[BMES] had our own kind of constitution, but we just changed it into your type of constitution to make you guys happy.” ADORABLE!

As an aside, it turns out that a certain senator (who might also be a Projects and Services co-chair) caused a technical error that stopped Sen. Rohini Bhatia’s photo from being properly displayed. Also, full credit goes to CommComm for getting the Hive’s Senate Web site updated with pictures of the new senators within a week. The updates came as all relevant time zones were still enjoying Jan. 31. SEE — PICTURES CAN BE FUN!

Now that we’ve run out of SA things to bet on, it looks like we’ll have to go back to sports gambling. Unfortunate. SAINTS 27, COLTS 24.

Adjourned!
