Absent Minded

February 9th, 2010 by Ross Brenneman

Let’s get straight to it this week: Last week, we called the Saints to win Super Bowl XLIV. We thought the margin would be closer, but still. If we’d made a bet, there might have been some solid money in it. OH HOW THOSE SAINTS GO MARCHING IN!

Which is just our way of transitioning into SA Appropriations Committee news, because SAAC’s handing out dough to a number of groups this week. That includes $50 for the Dodgeball team for new equipment, $324.97 for the Lacrosse team’s new balls and net, some money for a poetry slam hosted by Black Students’ Union, Chi Phi and UR Hip-Hop and $1,700 for Bhangra for travel stuff. BAILOUT!

Policy and Review Chair and Senator Kristian Brooks announced her committee’s support for Refugee Student Alliance’s full recognition under the banner of Community Service Network, which the Senate later approved in New Business. P&R also announced the overhaul of the Pagan Society, which, according to standard governing conventions, sucks. They’ll be needing a new constitution, a general interest meeting, at least 12 active members, an updated CCC site, more Board members, more advertising and there’s nothing that anyone can do about it. WHERE ARE YOUR JACKELOPE GODS NOW?

Projects and Services announced work on strengthening the Freshman Fellows program, a final taxi overhaul meeting and funding for a bus that will take students to a big upcoming squash game. The funding for the buses will come out of a coffer that, according to SA Treasurer Andrew Flack, has the slight disadvantage of not existing. FLACK SMACK!

In New Business, the Senate voted to approve two new accountants to the SA Treasury: Alex Hunstad and Yi Wang, both also members of the Badminton Club (of which a third accountant is already a member). When asked if that’s just slightly ridiculous, or if it will lead to attendance problems should there be a badminton tournament, Flack responded, “We don’t have problems with attendance, first of all.” FLACK DOUBLE-SMACK!

What followed was a motion by Sen. Sneha Rath to verify committee meeting attendance records at every Senate meeting. Led by initial opposition by Sen. Jon Junig, the majority of senators believed responsibility ultimately lied with committee chairs. An attempt to table the motion pending a re-design of the proposal failed, and in an ensuing vote the assembly almost unanimously rejected the measure. ATTEND-UATING CIRCUMSTANCES!

The motion you didn’t hear was the impeachment of Sen. Ryan Mills, who, following his fourth excused absence last week for rush events, was automatically placed on the agenda for removal. No one made the motion, though, which was good because hey-we-have-stuff-to-do.

The President’s Report was sadly empty due to the absence of SA President Eric Weissmann, who unfortunately resigned last night — JUST KIDDING! But that’s the practical joke that Vice President Brittany Crowley, standing in for Weissers, actually used to fool too many people.

Crowley did reveal some fascinating information, though, including a stunning gap between the increase in the undergraduate student body size (14 percent) and faculty size (2 percent). MMM… TWO PERCENT…

Also, recycling is up, while the belief that UR actually recycles is down. That latter fact comes courtesy of Sen. Ashley Haluck-Kangas, who says she’s been fending off rumors that UR is not very good at actually recycling, so much as saying it recycles, and hey wouldn’t it be great if that rumor could be dispelled? SUCH TRASHY GOSSIP!

It’s been 15 years, but our two best friends are still wonderfully relevant. MAGNIFICENT.

Adjourned!
