Live Fast and Die Young

It was Presidents’ Day, yet unlike the American government, UR and its student government were still at work. Which is good, because Washington and Lincoln were way overrated anyway. HONEST! (ABE)

According to Fraternity and Sorority Management Committee member and Senator J.J. Gonzalez, there are three sororities in the running to be invited to campus, and the winner will be in place by fall. That is, as Projects and Services Co-Chair Alissa Brill pointedly pointed out, pending the approval of Panhellenic Association. PANHELL OR HIGH WATER!

According to SAAC Master (Treasurer Andrew) FLACK! there are four supplemental requests this week. One is for $140 for a spaghetti dinner. One is for $105 for an Amnesty International concert (Jamnesty — PUNS!). One is for an R World R Vote retreat, in the amount of $2,500, that will teach students how to get involved in politics. The final one, which caused some contention, is $140 for Amnesty International (again) so they can have envelopes and stamps. Those envelopes will contain messages to various government officials urging them to do something or other, which may be for some kind of political reasons, according to anyone who thinks it through. SA funds cannot be spent for partisan reasons, of course, and many senators expressed doubts this expenditure would be an appropriate idea. CONSIDER YOURSELVES SAACKED!

Communications Chair and Senator Harry Brookstein announced the first and last Fireside Chat of the semester, which will be this Wednesday. Both he and Speaker of the Senate Kierstin Hughes encouraged attendance from the senators. BUT HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE FIRED UP?

Policy and Review Chair Kristian Brooks announced that Women’s Club Squash has been approved by Club Sports Council and Policy & Review for club status, and would be gunning for senate approval come new business. Also, she announced that a different group, devoted entirely to rousing discussions on any given topic, was denied preliminary status. The group would, however, get a trial run to see if genuine interest was there, and then maybe P&R would reconsider. TALK AMONGST YOURSELVES!

Projects and Services Co-Chair and Senator Bradley Halpern inquired whether senators thought it worthwhile to press for 24-7 ID card access to any building. The two main concerns were Riverview and Susan B. Anthony Halls, the latter of which contains Hillside Café. Regarding Hillside, Senator Lauren Sussman noted inadequacies with late-night access. Brill responded that such concerns had been addressed to Office of Residential Life Director Laurel Contomanolis, who said she had forgotten to take care of that. Maybe she could try a Google Task bar? Or a Sticky note. IT WILL HAPPEN AROUND THE TIME WE GET WI-FI EVERYWHERE.

In New Business, the Senate did indeed approve Women’s Club Squash. Then they appointed Senator Sylvia Guerra to the Sexual Assault Committee, Andrea Sobolewski to the ad hoc Alternative Spring Break Committee and agreed that last week’s minutes and attendance records were just skippy. MMM… SKIPPY…

President Eric Weissmann announced that the dead Fall Break Proposal was actually just in a persistive vegetative state, but may be waking up soon, in a couple years, maybe, if you really want it bad enough. Get your expectations up nice and high! But c’mon, kids don’t need breaks! Hard work builds character.

We’re going to stay up late and watch “West Wing” repeats. WE’RE JEBEDYIN’ OVER HERE!

Adjourned!
