24: “Day 8: 11:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.”

February 17th, 2010 by Erica Hyman

I’m not a huge fan of “24,” but ever since “Day 4″ (season four) I find myself watching the program in the winter. I tend to get a little lost as the season progresses and plot lines take strange turns. I often struggle to remember what exactly started that insanely eventful day.

This season I had a lot of reasons to watch. My ultimate girl crush/hero, Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) would have a major role in the season! I adore her to bits, and I would watch her knit if such a program existed.

I should be totally in love with this season. Sure the plot itself, about some peace deal with a fictional middle eastern country and missing nuclear rods, is meh, but there are a lot of actors I love on. First David Anders (Alias, Heroes) pops by to play the son of a Russian mob boss, then another Russian mob boss is played by my favorite Cylon from Battlestar Galactica, Callum Keith Rennie.

So you can imagine my disappointment upon discovering that Sackhoff plays an IT analyst, Dana Walsh, who has a mysterious past that involves felonies and a jilted lover. No guns, no butt kicking. Frankly it’s boring, and it takes a lot to make Katee Sackhoff boring.

This week had equal amounts of boring drama, seriously this Dana Walsh stuff is so grating. If she’s using a fake identity (as it’s been hinted) how did she ever get a job with a government agency? But this week did have Jack Bauer back in form. Most of the day, he’d been sitting in a car, monitoring various situations. None of the trademark Jack Bauer behavior we’ve been accustomed too.

But between the hours of 11:00 p.m.–12:00 a.m., Jack got his groove back. I was relieved to see Jack being tortured, because I knew it would result in trademark Jack Bauer revenge. It was a joy to see him electrocute a man with his feet (as he was hanging from a pipe). It was also equally wonderful to see him shimmy across said pipe and force it loose. Then, hands still tied, he took down his torturer using only the lower half of his body. I must say, there was a lot of leg action for Bauer (and Keifer Sutherland) this week.

I’m not really captivated by this season, but then again, I don’t think many people are. The Dana Walsh subplot, which seems to be a big focus, fails on so many levels. Ignoring the implausibility, it isn’t even proving to be that satisfying, we don’t even know the full picture. But at this point, I don’t care. “24″ writers, just give Katee Sackhoff a gun and send her out in the field. I’d approve of that.
