Passed and Present

March 30th, 2010 by Ross Brenneman

We’re heading into Passover season, which means religious activities have moved the Senate’s beginning time back to 9:30 p.m. SEDER IT ISN’T SO!

All-Campus Judicial Council Chief Justice John Oakford announced the names of the four new justices selected to fill ACJC’s upcoming vacancies. He also announced that Erin Dick would be the new chief justice, while Tess Petersen will be the new Associate Chief Justice. HOPEFULLY THEY DIDN’T RUSH TO JUDGMENT.

In Open Forum, Dean of the College Richard Feldman came to talk about how the College would like to pay for UR’s private busing system, which in all likelihood would end up costing each student an additional $25 on top of tuition, etc. There was a lot of general talk about how money is spent, how firing lazy employees could save money, how information could be shared, etc. No matter what, though, there seems to be a new committee forming. WAY TO GET A “MOVE” ON!

New Business came before committee reports, because it was already 11 p.m. and kids were waiting. First up was the Society of Undergraduate Biology Students, who rewrote their constitution to keep up with current guidelines. The Senate unanimously approved. WELL THAT WAS AN EASY CELL!

Engineers Without Borders, represented by Nick Hamlin, came up for official recognition, having been on preliminary status for a while. The group exists to help spur engineering projects in primarily undeveloped countries. The Senate unanimously approved. YOU DON’T CROSS ENGINEERS — THEY CROSS YOU.

In the last portion of New Business, Sen. Bradley Halpern motioned to de-recognize the Pagan Students’ Community, represented by its president Jason Powell, who has presided for the last three years, except this past fall when he was abroad in Japan.

Apparently, that one semester away was enough to sink the entire organization (not that this demonstrates anything…), and PSC failed to fill out the mandatory renewal form. For this, it received sanctions from Policy & Review. Suffering from both internal and external communication difficulties, PSC somehow scrapped together enough goodwill that, in early February, P&R chair and Sen. Kristian Brooks asked Associate Director of Wilson Commons Student Activities Laura Ballou to restore the group’s CCC. Powell contended that Ballou took a month to do that, further compromising the Pagans. PSC was also unable to get access to the online room reservation system, which Powell blamed on Event Support, who didn’t respond to his request. Also, no one in the Student Activities Office apparently told Powell he could still reserve rooms using the standard paper form, which has generally been replaced by the online system, though both means are equally valid.

All that matters as pretext to an argument that hinged largely on whether the group was actually failing (it was), or if the Students’ Association as a whole, top down, had failed to be supportive (kinda). After two fierce hours, the Senate accepted the former as more reasonable, and by secret ballot de-recognized the PSC. Had the Pagans been more talented with their tarot cards, they would have seen this coming and saved us two hours. DO PAGANS ACCEPT THE MAGIC 8 BALL? (ALL SIGNS POINT TO ‘NO’!)

Alas, the Senate also seems to have lost its focus on how much discussion needs to happen before it’s just too much.

Committee reports began around 12:50 a.m., with only 10 minutes to go before the building closed. SA Treasurer Andrew Flack noted that the Experience Eastman Fund would soon be depleted, due to an RA trip to the RPO, and bussing that will transport Eastman students to ArtAwake. The treasurer is also looking for his successor, and all interested need to notify him by Friday. What are we going to do without him, though? There will be such a void. FLACK VAC!

Winter bike storage ends this Friday, according to Projects & Services Co-Chair Alissa Brill. Senators will be on hand to schlep the bikes. WE MUST BE BIKE TIRES, BECAUSE WE’RE PUMPED.

Or, perhaps more appropriately, we’re tired.

Adjourned!
